Out of Hand fulfilled several dreams. My writer, editor, co-producer, and lead actor Jeff Colangelo had wanted to write about a man whose hand came to life since he was in high school. He never thought it would come to fruition because he didn’t think anyone would be interested in telling that story. I’ve wanted to tell a story that was filmed entirely in Dallas in a neighborhood I was familiar with with all Dallas-based technicians and artists, for at least half a decade. Both of our dreams turned out differently than expected, as our circumstances in developing this project were challenging to say the least, but we are still very happy with the final product.

I believe Dallas is one of the most underutilized and under appreciated sectors in the film industry, and creating Out of Hand, the brainchild of two Dallasites who love this city and all of its moxie, was the best way to spend one month in quarantine. We frequently work together on client jobs, but being able to set aside every other responsibility and focus on our own creativity was a gift.

In my mind, the fact that we created this project and executed it at the level we did in the midst of a global pandemic is the definition of Dallas culture. No giving up, no surrendering, just keeping our heads down and our masks up, one step at a time.
