Character Breakdown:

AMALIA ALICEA (60s, Hispanic/Latina, Bilingual) Amalia is the widowed grandmother and elder of the family. While on the outside she is well put together and almost on the edge of trendy, she is extremely traditional when it comes to religion and her adherence to what she views as true moral values. Her relationship with her daughter Raquel has been fraught since Raquel’s divorce, resulting in only infrequent and superficial visits between the two over the last couple of years. Amalia cares deeply for her family, but she’s built deep roots in her faith to anchor her in this later phase of her life, and finds it extremely difficult to reconcile with compromise.

RAQUEL ALICEA (40s, Hispanic/Latina) Raquel is Mayra’s mother and takes a serious role as her protector. Having grown up under the strict rule of her mother, she has raised Mayra to be fiercely independent. She is a no-nonsense head of household, focused on making ends meet as a single mom. For most of her life, she has done her best to avoid conflict which at times has brought her into emotionally abusive relationships. Though to her, her recent divorce was a personal win that has helped bring back her freedom and self-confidence, she is judged harshly by Amalia for having failed her commitments before God.

MAYRA ALICEA (16-17, Hispanic/Latinx, Femme) Mayra has grown up in a completely different and more open world than her grandmother, but has been instilled a deep respect for her elders by Raquel. Though outspoken and cheerful around her friends and close family members, Mayra often retreats into her shell around extended family where she knows more open perspectives on religion and sexuality are likely to cause conflict. Her usual approach of biting her tongue comes to an end when Amalia’s words begin to hit too close to home, bringing into question whether her own grandmother would stop loving her simply because of how she identifies. Torn by her desire to please and her need to be truthful, Mayra must make a choice on whether or not she will finally speak up this time.
